Mahogany obsidian, also known as mountain mahogany, is natural glass obsidian that has iron inclusions which creates the mesmerizing mahogany colored swirls within. Obsidian, an igneous rock, is a type of naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock. It forms when lava comes out of a volcano and solidifies above the Earth’s surface. This happens from the rapid cooling of viscous lava from volcanoes which occurs when it comes in contact with cold air or water. This formation happens around the edges of a lava flow, a volcanic dome, or along a dike. It can be found anywhere volcanic activity has occurred. Mahogany obsidian most notably comes from the countries of Mexico, Japan, Afghanistan, Brazil, and USA. This could be the closest thing to holding lava in your hand without needing to get a new hand!
Not only is it a fascinating and beautiful stone, it has some significant historical connotations. Obsidian is derived from the name Obsuis, a Roman explorer who was believed to have discovered the rock in Ethiopia. It was used by Native Americans and many other early peoples for weapons, implements, tools, and ornaments and by the ancient Aztec and ancient Greek civilizations for mirrors. Because of its conchoidal fracture (smooth curved surfaces and sharp edges), the sharpest stone artifacts were fashioned from obsidian. Some of these, mostly arrowheads, have been dated by means of the hydration rinds that form on their exposed surfaces through time ( we won’t bore you with the details of that but if you’re interested, it’s a pretty cool dating technique). During the Middle Ages it was used to drive out evil spirits and demons. It was believed to act as a shield repelling negative or harmful energies. Speaking of keeping negative energies at bay...
According to Metaphysics: Mahogany Obsidian is used to cleanse and unblock the sacral chakra, the center of the emotional balance and creative energies. Healing the sacral chakra is said to reactivate one’s pleasures, playfulness, and sexuality. It also removes psychic blockages and assists in inducing spiritual awakening. Meditating with Mahogany Obsidian can erase unpleasant memories brought by abuse, humiliation, and shame.
