EMPEROR NORTON
February 4, 1818 - January 8, 1880.
In 1859, Joshua Abraham Norton declared himself Emperor of the United States and protector of Mexico after losing his fortune speculating on the rice market. San Francisco was entertained by his proclamations, such as his order that the United States Congress be dissolved and calling for the construction of a bridge and tunnel crossing San Francisco Bay to connect San Francisco with Oakland. He issued his own money which was accepted by some restaurants and shops in San Francisco.
A true San Francisco eccentric.
